Medicine and names
The ingredient and the names on the box
An offer is easier to read once the ingredient, brand and purpose have separate names.
What tirzepatide does
Tirzepatide copies signals from the gut called GIP and GLP-1, which help tell the brain you feel full.
Those signals also help the body handle sugar after a meal.
Part of the explanation for GIP’s role in food intake comes from animal studies.
A peptide is a chain of protein building blocks. The name tells you its make-up. Safety and lawful use depend on the product, not on that word.
For a care decision, ask which actual medicine is proposed, rather than relying on the word peptide.
Mounjaro and diabetes
For September 2026, FDA approval of tirzepatide (Mounjaro) covers blood-sugar control for adults and children aged 10 or older who have type 2 diabetes.
A further Mounjaro use has FDA approval: lowering the chance of death due to heart disease, a stroke or a heart attack. It applies to high-risk adults with type 2 diabetes.
Mounjaro had no weight-loss approval as of September 2026.
Zepbound and weight
For September 2026, the US approval for tirzepatide (Zepbound) covers long-term weight management for adults who have obesity, or overweight together with a related health condition.
The official medicine information is called the label. It pairs this use with food that provides fewer calories, plus increased physical activity.
Another approved Zepbound use is treating obstructive sleep apnea when it is moderate or severe and the adult also has obesity. This kind of sleep apnea involves blocked airflow that interrupts breathing in sleep.
Ask the doctor who assessed your sleep whether this is the type and degree you have.
In September 2026, Zepbound did not have approval to protect the heart.
The container does not settle the question
As recorded in September 2026, approved tirzepatide products include pens and vials.
The Zepbound label also lists the KwikPen, a pen holding several doses for the same patient.
A small bottle of medicine is called a vial. Ask for the product’s full name and who made it, rather than judging it by the container.
FDA’s medicine approval records showed no approved generic version of tirzepatide when checked in September 2026.
A generic has its own approval as a version of a branded medicine.
Compounding means preparing a medicine to order, and does not give it that approval.
